A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer and SWAT veteran died late Friday when a distraction device used in tactical incidents exploded while he was securing his gear in his department-assigned SWAT vehicle, reports the Charlotte Observer.

Officer Fred Thornton, a 23-year veteran and father of four, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center and underwent surgery, yet succumbed to his injuries.
