The memorial service for Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Police Officer Fred Thornton has been relocated to a church that can accommodate the larger crowd expected for the event, reports the Charlotte Observer.
The service was moved to uptown's First Baptist Church of Charlotte from Calvary Church, because hundreds of officers from around the state and well wishers are expected to attend.
Thornton was the longest-tenured officer in the history of the agency's SWAT team. He was accidentally killed Friday when a "flash-bang" device exploded as he secured tactical gear in his assigned SWAT vehicle at his home.
