The federal trial of a former Chicago police supervisor began with an initial day of testimony that included allegations that he played Russian roulette with a suspect and used plastic bags and an electrical device to force a murder confession, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Jon Burge faces charges of perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying in a 2003 lawsuit when he said he did not use torture or know about its use by detectives under his command in the 1970s and 1980s.
