The first thing you need to know about First Choice Armor’s new Multi-Use Shield Technology (M.U.S.T.) is that it was designed by shield operators for shield operators.

Mike Ott, a former Lakewood, Colo., SWAT officer and one of the three cops who developed the M.U.S.T., says that the shield features three major innovations. First, it’s very light, weighing only 14 pounds. Second, its silhouette design gives officers the ability to aim and fire their weapons without exposing themselves. Finally, the M.U.S.T. has both a handle and an adjustable forearm strap. This combination makes it easy for an officer to rotate the shield when maneuvering in tight spots.

The M.U.S.T. offers NIJ Level IIIA protection. Ott personally shot the shield with 76 rounds of handgun and .22 rifle ammo. “I even shot the rivets and the view port. I made sure that nothing would penetrate this shield,” he says.

A variety of options are available for the M.U.S.T. If officers are going into an environment where they may face bad guys armed with rifles, it can be fitted with a 10x12 hard plate. The shield can stand on its own with a pair of removable feet. It can also be equipped with LED or halogen lights.
