Vice President Joe Biden will present proposals for new gun-control regulations to President Obama by Tuesday, he told reporters Thursday.
Biden, the author of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, has been meeting with victims' rights groups, gun-control advocates, and law enforcement officials as part of a task force set up in response to the Sandy Hook school shooting.
The vice president said a consensus has emerged on several measures including universal background checks, restrictions on high-capacity magazines, and increased federal capabilities for effectively researching gun violence, reports CBS News.
A consensus has not yet been reached about renewing the federal assault weapons ban.
A universal background check would likely apply to gun show and private party purchases of firearms, reports the Washington Post.
On Wednesday, Biden indicated that Obama would take unilateral, executive action on gun control and make changes to laws without congressional approval, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Later today, Biden will meet with the National Rifle Association and entertainment groups. Attorney General Eric Holder is meeting with major firearm retailers including Wal-Mart.
