Tennis Maynard, who has been indicted by a federal grand jury in the killing of Sheriff Crum, made false statements when filling out a Form 4473, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The form is required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to obtain a firearm and serves as the basis for a federal background check.

Prior to purchasing the firearms, the 37-year-old Maynard had been committed to a mental institution. A federal grand jury indicted Maynard on 10 counts. He faces up to 75 years in prison if convicted.
