The Los Angeles City Council has agreed to pay $6.6 million to settle a lawsuit stemming from a fatal crash involving a speeding Los Angeles Police Department officer.
The settlement is the largest the city has paid to the family of a citizen killed in a police vehicle accident.
The accident occurred on a night in April 2010 when 27-year-old Jovanna Lugo's car was broadsided by a police vehicle driven by Officer Richard Brubaker as she pulled out of her Sylmar driveway, reports the Los Angeles Times .
Brubaker and his partner were responding to a report of a possible stolen car and had not activated the cruiser's emergency lights. The police vehicle was estimated to be traveling about 70 mph in a 35-mph zone. The headlights on the police car were also turned off, reports the Times.
