American Science and Engineering Inc. ("AS&E"), a worldwide supplier of innovative X-ray detection solutions, today introduced the CarView portal, an advanced high-throughput scanning system for superior detection of hidden threats in cars and small vehicles.
The CarView system simultaneously produces two images of the top-down view of the vehicle: a high-quality, dual-energy transmission image that highlights metallic threats, and a photo-like Z Backscatter image that highlights organic threats and contraband. The relocatable, cost-effective system is ideal for securing special events and parking garages, as well as high-threat facilities, government buildings, and vital checkpoints.
In addition to AS&E's signature Z Backscatter technology, the CarView system uses innovative Wave Shifting Fibers (WSF) detector technology to provide dual-energy, material discrimination capabilities. WSF detector technology has enabled the development of more powerful, efficient, compact, and rugged AS&E X-ray systems, such as the CarView portal, which fits into existing traffic lanes and delivers high-throughput screening without sacrificing image quality.
"We continue to develop and introduce innovative underlying technologies, such as Wave Shifting Fibers, that can extend the capabilities of new platforms," said Chuck Dougherty, AS&E's President and CEO. "The CarView system is the latest in our family of solutions to leverage multiple, complementary technologies in a low-cost, relocatable, compact footprint. This will enable AS&E to extend the served market for portal systems to include commercial applications, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to develop a range of solutions that meets our customers' real-world operational requirements."
Key Features of the CarView System:
The CarView system provides multi-technology inspection while maintaining the flow of commerce and operations at high-traffic and vital locations.
Superior Threat Detection – The CarView system combines dual-energy transmission and Z Backscatter technology for superior threat detection. Dual-energy transmission technology provides enhanced detection of metallic threats such as weapons, guns, artillery shells, and VBIEDs. Z Backscatter complements this by providing a photo-like image of scanned objects, assisting operators in the identification of anomalies such as explosives, drugs, currency, alcohol, cigarettes, and other organic threats and contraband.
High Throughput – The CarView portal offers high-throughput screening of up to 400 passenger vehicles per hour and is capable of imaging vehicles at speeds of up to 20 kph. The CarView system's image analysis software compensates for variations in vehicle speed.
Compact and Easily Relocatable – The versatile CarView system is easily relocatable, and its compact footprint meets the physical requirements of standard tollbooth lanes. This efficient design enables officials to seamlessly integrate the CarView portal into existing operations at critical infrastructure, garages, event entrances, and high-threat facilities. The system also features a construction-less design for fast, easy set-up.
Safe Scanning Levels – The CarView system adheres to strict international and U.S. standards for radiation protection and the dose to driver is below the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) limit of 0.25 microSievert per screening. In addition to a low dose to driver, the CarView portal offers a tight exclusion zone, making the system ideal for installation in high-traffic areas.
