Just after 7 p.m. police got a call about a man who was hanging over the edge of a bridge. Officer Dan Hicks reached out to the man and developed a rapport with him.

The Bloomingdale Police Department responded to a call where a 21-year-old mentally disabled woman had wandered away from her home. Officers found her walking along the roadway, adding that she was "visibly scared and upset and would not come with the police."

So after 14 years serving the city as a police officer, Peters spent his last day doing just that. Using his own money, Peters, who lives in Andover, said he purchased five gift cards from Target and five gift cards from the grocery chain Cub Foods worth $50 each and handed them out to strangers in Brooklyn Center. Minnesota Officer Working to Ensure Safer Encounters Between Police and Autistic People
Zink, 45, recently created the Cop Autism Response Education (CARE) Project, as part of a groundbreaking effort to ensure that police calls involving people with autism end safely. His first priority has been getting to know St. Paul families with autistic children and explaining how police respond to domestic violence calls — a not uncommon scenario involving those with an autism spectrum disorder. His second is helping police find quieter and gentler ways to defuse those calls.
