Ride & Run to Remember Event Supports Law Enforcement Officers
The Ride & Run to Remember is scheduled for Oct. 12-13 in Washington, DC with a 55- or 30-mile bike ride and a 5K run. All net proceeds benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Officer Fatalities Rise, Still Near 60-Year Low
Law enforcement saw a 9 percent increase in the number of officers killed on duty during the first half of 2013. Despite the increase, it marked the second lowest number since 1963. There were 51 officers killed from January through June.

Va. Officer Saves Family from Armed Jealous Ex-Boyfriend
Officer Joe Young protected a family from a man recently released from jail who threatened his ex-girlfriend because she had a new boyfriend. Young was forced to shoot the man, who took his own life.

Recovering from a Rifle-Wielding Suspect
Fond du Lac (Wis.) Police Officer Ryan Williams was been named the NLEOMF's December 2011 Officer of the Month. Officer Williams fought for his life and recovery after he was shot by a suspect armed with a .308 rifle. Read the full story here.

Retrieving Evidence from Lakes and Rivers
The NLEOMF honored Slidell (La.) Police Officer Mark Michaud as its Officer of the Month for June 2011. Officer Michaud heads up his agency's dive team, which finds and retrieves stolen vehicles and other evidence. He also trains and assists other agencies in water survival and rescues. Attempted Rescue of Downed Officers
Sgt. Karl Lounge and Officer Doug Weaver of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) PD were among five agency officers who were instrumental in the attempted rescue of three officers ambushed inside of a house. They were named officers of the month for October 2011. Read the full story here.

Shootout at N.J. Snow Bank
Officers Rachel Morgan and Ryan Hayo of the Paramus (N.J.) Police Department were named officers of the month for July 2011 by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The officers returned fired at a driver who began shooting at Morgan from his car lodged in a snow bank. Read the full story here.

Police Week 2013: Candlelight Vigil
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's 2013 Candlelight Vigil on Monday evening celebrated fallen officers. This year, 321 officers' names were added to the memorial from 2012 to as far back as 1814. Read our coverage of the vigil here.

Police Week Candlelight Vigil Honors 321 Fallen Officers
Last year’s total of 120 officers killed in the line of duty was a significant reduction from the 169 killed in 2011 and the lowest number since 1959. All of the speakers at this year’s vigil praised this trend as a move in the right direction and focused on the need to further reduce line-of-duty deaths.
