Twenty-five officers were shot and killed during the first six months of the year, compared to 33 during the same period in 2022, a 24% decrease year over year.

The No. 2 Whelen Camaro, driven by Sheldon Creed for Richard Childress Racing (RCR), featured a special NLEOMF paint scheme for the race. The artwork included the names of 556 officers killed in the line of duty.

Senior Corporal Sergio Perez did not hesitate to provide assistance, and discovered the child was completely unresponsive and not breathing. Using his CPR training, he was able to quickly restore the child’s breathing.

As they were patrolling near East 183rd Street, they noticed two suspicious persons walking with ski masks covering their faces. The officers drove toward the two suspects intending to stop them when one of the suspects reportedly turned without warning.

Despite being wounded himself, Iurato maintained his composure and moved to a position of cover. He was then able to determine the suspect’s position and returned fire, striking and killing the armed suspect.

Fewer Covid-19 Fatalities Led to 61% Drop in Duty Deaths During 2022, Firearms Deaths Remain High
Firearms-related fatalities have claimed the lives of 64 officers in 2022, which mirrors the number of firearms-related fatalities in 2021. Both years represent a 21% increase in firearms-related deaths when compared to the average of 53 firearms-related fatalities from 2010-2020.
