Thousands of law enforcement officers, families and friends of fallen officers, and police supporters gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC, Saturday night for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 35th annual Candlelight Vigil.

This year the names of 556 U.S. fallen law enforcement officers were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, bringing the total number of names to 23,785.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland started the roll call that included federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement officers, WUSA reports.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's CEO, Marcia Ferranto, says the candlelight vigil is a reminder to families across the country that they are not alone as they mourn the loss of their family members.
