California Man Gets 14 Years for Officer's Shooting

A superior court judge sentenced the man convicted of fatally shooting Rialto (Calif.) Police officer and SWAT member Sergio Carrera Jr. to 14 years in prison, reports the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

Krist Antonio Wiggins' sentence was the longest possible based on verdicts by juries, who convicted him of involuntary manslaughter plus a "special allegation" that he discharged a firearm.

Carrera, 29, was killed after Rialto's SWAT team entered Wiggins' apartment on Oct. 18, 2007, while serving a search warrant. During a physical struggle with an officer, one of three shots from the officer's rifle struck Carrera in the face.
