The Los Angeles Police Department has launched a massive dragnet for the two men who sprayed an LAPD officer with gunfire, after a pedestrian stop in South Los Angeles.

The wounded officer, who is assigned to the 77th Division, was being treated for gunshot wounds to his wrist and elbow. Several other rounds were absorbed by the officer's ballistic vest.

The shooting occurred at 2:45 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Western Avenue and 66th Street as the officers were investigating a series of car burglaries.

When the officers approached two men, one fired as many as 15 rounds at the officers. One suspect ran south on Western, while the other ran north on Western. The wounded officer, while laboring to breathe, struggled to give dispatchers his location and a description of the attackers.

The LAPD issued a citywide tactical alert, mobilizing its SWAT officers and helicopters as police began door-to-door searches.
