The Nassau County Police Department is mourning the death of one of its K-9s after the dog passed away over the weekend.
The agency said on Facebook, "K-9 Jake joined the Department in 2009 and over the last ten years he and his partner—Police Officer Jeff Shaikh—worked as a team to keep Nassau County safe. Together, they were responsible for arresting dangerous criminals, getting millions of dollars’ worth of illegal drugs off our streets, and finding people with cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, and dementia and bringing them back home to their families. One of Jake’s most memorable arrests was in 2015, when he and PO Shaikh located the person responsible for the murder of Hicksville gas station attendant Hany Awad."
The Facebook post concluded, "Jake was a brave and loyal police dog, and he leaves behind quite a legacy in the #NCPD."
