South Carolina Bills Would Increase Penalties for Killing Police K-9s

The maximum prison sentence for killing a police dog or horse would rise from five years to 10 years. The offense also would carry a minimum two-year jail sentence and a fine of up to $20,000.

Judge Melissa M. Phinn said the state did not present adequate evidence that proved Jeffrey Bolger, 50, was responsible for the death of a seven-year-old Shar-Pei named Nala, when he slit the dog's throat in June 2014.
