N.C. State Trooper Shot to Death Near Canton

A North Carolina state Highway Patrol trooper was shot and killed Tuesday night during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near here, authorities said. Lt. Everett Clendenin, public information officer for the patrol, said in a news release that the trooper had stopped a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near exit 31 at around 10:20 p.m.

When Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Carlos Borland pulled over a Chevrolet Blazer on I-80 in response to a call that originated from a nearby truck stop, he did so without the knowledge that the vehicle's driver was an escapee from a North Carolina prison and that he had allegedly murdered two people the previous week. The Blazer was itself reported stolen and bearing license plates stolen from yet another vehicle.

Records show that on Sept. 23, 1997, North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Ed Lowry pulled a car with South Carolina plates on I-95 near Fayetteville. The reason for the stop was reported as a seat belt violation, but the real reason was probably just that feeling that some veteran cops get that something just ain’t right.
