Deputy Chris Johnson, 51, died at the scene, CBS17 reports.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a marked Harnett County Sheriff’s Office Dodge Charger traveling east on Darroch Road crossed the center line and crashed into a tractor trailer that was heading west. The Charger then “rotated in the roadway” after impact and hit a Dodge Durango that was behind the tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer went of the left side of the road before coming to a stop, while both the Harnett County patrol car and the Dodge Durango ran off the right side of the road and came to rest on the shoulder.

NCHP said the tractor-trailer driver was not hurt, while the driver and a passenger in the Durango had minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Johnson had been with the Harnett County SO for 16 months and served as a school resource officer at Highland Middle School in Sanford. Johnson also previously worked with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office for over 15 years and the Dunn Police Department for 9 years.
