President Donald Trump said on Truth Social Sunday that he wants to reopen Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary and use it to imprison “vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders.”
Opened as a prison in 1934, Alcatraz (“The Rock”) Federal Penitentiary is situated in San Francisco Bay and is now a museum. The prison closed in 1963.
“When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets,” Trump said in the Truth Social post.
He said he was directing the Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz.”
