The field of candidates for San Francisco's new police chief has been reduced to a dozen or so semifinalists, including five from inside the department, according to sources with knowledge of the selection process.

The police commission president said someone close to the department appears to be "intentionally and maliciously" releasing names to frighten off external applicants, whose current positions might be at risk if news of their job hunts became public.
