U.S. Marshals brought down an alleged one-man crime wave recently when they arrested Gary Hendricks. A fugitive from justice since 2008, Hendricks allegedly embarked on a crime spree in North Carolina spanning at least five counties including Johnston, Cumberland, Bladen, Columbus and Davidson. U.S. Marshals arrested him today in New York.
Earlier this year, North Carolina law enforcement officers from the White Lake Police Department and Bladen County Sheriff's Office attempted to arrest Hendricks Feb. 8 on several outstanding felony warrants. During the arrest, Hendricks allegedly assaulted a sheriff's deputy and a police officer with a vehicle. Hendricks was able to escape. As a result of this incident, Hendricks was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and flee to elude arrest. The Bladen County Sheriff's Office and the White Lake Police Department then requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Eastern North Carolina Violent Fugitive Task Force.
U.S. Marshals Service personnel initiated a fugitive investigation revealing Hendricks had fled North Carolina and was residing in New York. The E/NC Violent Fugitive Task Force then requested the assistance of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force in the location and apprehension of Hendricks.
"I am very pleased the close cooperation and shared intelligence between our District Task Force and the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force led to the capture of Gary Hendricks," said U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Clyde Cook Jr. "His arrest finally ends a dangerous multi-county crime wave in North Carolina."
At approximately 6 a.m., today, members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Riverhead Police Department successfully apprehended Hendricks on the 700 block of East Main Street, in Riverhead, N.Y. Hendricks was taken into custody and transported to the Suffolk County Jail where he is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina.
Hendricks was sought for various crimes including: assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, resisting public officer, flee to elude arrest, breaking and entering, reckless driving to endanger, financial card theft, possession of stolen goods, financial card fraud, identity theft, larceny of a motor vehicle, injury to personal property, failure to return rental property, obtaining property by false pretense and a North Carolina state probation violation.
The U.S. Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force, Eastern District of North Carolina, is a team of law enforcement officers from the U.S. Marshals Service, Fayetteville Police Department, Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Lumberton Police Department, and the North Carolina Division of Community Corrections. The task force's objective is to seek out and arrest violent fugitives. Last year, U.S. Marshals task forces arrested more than 73,000 state and local fugitives.
