A Chicago police officer was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon as he left a police building in the South Side's Englewood neighborhood, the department announced on its Facebook page .
While leaving a police building at about 3:45 p.m., the officer was shot in the head, while trying to stop a robbery attempt, the Sun-Times reports.
The incident happened at 61st and Racine outside of the facility used by the department's targeted response and gang enforcement units. The gunman, who was wounded in the incident, was taken into custody.
The 43-year-old officer has not been identified. The department's more recent duty death was Alejandro "Alex" Valadez, who was fatally shot on June 1, 2009 in the Englewood District.
In May, off-duty officer Thomas Wortham IV was killed outside his parents' home in the nearby Chatham neighborhood, allegedly by thieves trying to steal his motorcycle.
