Slain Chicago Officer Worked to Reduce Violence In South Side Neighborhood
Wortham, 30, was visiting his father, Tom Wortham III, late Wednesday to share photos from his trip to D.C. during National Police Week.
Tom Wortham IV, the Chicago police officer killed in a gunfight with four men attempting to steal his motorcycle, had been working to curtail increasing gun violence in the South Side neighborhood where he lived.
Wortham, who was profiled in the Chicago Tribune the week before he was shot, had overseen the installation of locks at basketball courts in Chatham as a result of recent shootings at the Cole Park courts.
Wortham, 30, was visiting his father, Tom Wortham III, late Wednesday to share photos from his trip to D.C. during National Police Week, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Wortham and his father, a retired Chicago police sergeant, exchanged gunfire with four men who attempted to steal Wortham's new motorcycle. One suspect was killed; a second was critically injured; a third surrendered to police; the fourth was arrested during a vehicle stop early Thursday.
