Promising to cut positions from his city's police department, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums released a plan Tuesday that would eliminate 53 officers and 27 unfilled positions, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

The move would help close a $31 million city budget deficit for 2011. Other council members also said the police union would need to make additional contract concessions.

Dellums plan scales back earlier plans from other councilmembers that called for the city to lay off as many as 200 officers.
