Harris County Sheriff's deputy Daniel McCool's new law enforcement association—the Caucasian Law Enforcement Association—is stirring some controversy.
McCool started the CLEA, began a Facebook page, launched a website and has begun accepting members. The first officer to sign up? A Hispanic female deputy.
McCool said he started the group because Caucasians are now minorities in Harris County and within his agency.
As of 2008, the American Community Survey data lists that whites had dropped to 54 percent of the Harris County population. Whites are projected to be in the minority by 2014, with Hispanics likely making up the majority.
Representatives of officer groups of African-American and Hispanic officers say the group is unneccesary.
