Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland arrived at the department today for the first time as the new chief, after a badge-pinning ceremony on Wednesday where City Council members said he's "walking into a minefield," the Houston Chronicle reports.
McClelland, who rose up the ranks from a patrolman in 1969 to assistant chief, was chosen in December as interim chief by Mayor Annise Parker who had called for new police leadership during her fall campaign.
He takes over a 5,400-officer department, and has said he'll place more emphasis on street patrols, making the department more efficient and improving relationships with the city's diverse communities. Wach a video of the new Houston police chief's message to the department on his first day.
