An edict by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger suspending overtime pay for state workers has put the brakes on CHP special enforcement programs, including a crackdown on speeding motorcyclists scheduled for this past weekend on Angeles Crest Highway.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol's Altadena Station were scheduled to conduct the enforcement program along Angeles Crest, also known as State Route 2, this past Saturday in response to a jump in collisions on forest roads, according to station Capt. Bill Dance.
But the program was suspended - along with all other programs that involve OT for officers - by the governor's edict earlier this month, even though grant money from the state Office of Traffic Safety would have reimbursed the agency for any overtime costs.
"The CHP is complying with the governor's directive," said Cmdr. Fran Clader, head of the agency's public information office. "Any special programs above and beyond our core mission and that require overtime for officers have been put on hold until the directive is lifted."
