Mass. GOP Lawmakers Demand Parole Ban For Certain Violent Criminals

The state's Parole Board voted unanimously in 2008 to free Dominic Cinelli, a serial armed robber serving three life sentences. Cinelli is now accused of fatally shooting Officer John Maguire during a Dec. 26 armed robbery of a Kohl's jewelry counter.

A group of Massachusetts House Republicans called for a vote Tuesday on a bill that, if it had been in place, would have kept behind bars the man accused of killing a Woburn Police officer during a botched armed robbery, reports the Boston Globe.

The state's Parole Board voted unanimously in 2008 to free Dominic Cinelli, a serial armed robber serving three life sentences. Cinelli, 57, is now accused of fatally shooting Officer John Maguire during a Dec. 26 armed robbery of a Kohl's jewelry counter.

The Parole Board is meeting today to discuss the matter, following Gov. Deval Patrick's call for an investigation into a decision that has drawn heavy criticism from the law enforcement community.

Cinelli reportedly shot Officer Maguire in the chest twice during a foot pursuit.
