Texas Sgt. Who Lost Eye In Shotgun Blast Recounts Encounter

Sgt. James Kelemen Sr. recounted the encounter with a man he knew wanted "suicide by cop," when he responded to the call of a man threatening an employee at a bakery.

The Conroe (Texas) Police officer who lost his eye when he was hit by a shotgun blast recounted his harrowing encounter to the Houston Chronicle.

Sgt. James Kelemen Sr. recounted the encounter with a man he knew wanted "suicide by cop," when he responded to the call of a man threatening an employee at a bakery. That man, identified as 54-year-old James Richard Hill, did a dance and fired at the officer from behind a vehicle at about 20 yards.

Sgt. Kelemen said he didn't immediately fire at Hill because he didn't want to risk hitting nearby bystanders. A surgeon removed the right eye of Sgt. Kelemen, who will receive a prosthetic eye.
