A troubled Piscataway (N.J.) Police sergeant who barricaded himself inside his home was fatally shot after he fired at officers from his porch with a submachine gun.

Sgt. David Powell, a 22-year veteran of the force, had earlier been called to the station after a report that he violated a restraining order. He was recently divorced from his second wife.

Sgt. Powell exchanged several calls with officers at the station on Sunday afternoon. At 6:48 p.m., he exited the house, stepped onto the porch, and fired multiple shots from a 9mm submachine gun. Officers fired back, reports the Star-Ledger.
