St. Petersburg (Fla.) Police Officer David Crawford wasn't wearing a ballistic vest, when he was shot and killed Monday, after confronting a suspected prowler, reports the Tampa Tribune.
As a result, St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon said he will review the department's policy of optional body armor for officers. Chief Harmon said vests have improved substantially, yet Florida's heat and humidity have made it hard for him to mandate them for all officers.
Ballistic vests are worn by about 70-75% of law enforcement officers in Florida, according to the report.
