Nineteen officers rejoined the Camden (N.J.) Police Department on Tuesday, as the police union's president questioned a memo outlining the dismantling of the agency in favor of county law enforcement.
The salaries of the rehired officers will be covered by a COPS grant, which is good for three years.
Last week, a document slipped under the door of John Williamson, president of FOP Lodge 1, apparently gave a suggested timeline for the elimination of the department in favor of a countywide police department.
A new department could be established as soon as June 27, and the Camden PD could be eliminated by Sept. 26.
