Rapid City (S.D.) Police Chief Steve Allender eulogized Officer Nick Armstrong on Thursday as a "hometown hero" who died in defense of fellow officers and his community during an Aug. 2 gunfight.

Armstrong and Officer Ryan McCandless were killed, and Officer Tim Doyle was seriously injured with gunshot wounds to the face, head, and chest. Their alleged assailant, 22-year-old Daniel Tiger, was also killed. Officer Doyle was released from the hospital Tuesday; his recovery is expected to take several months.

Chief Allender offered additional details of the gunfight, saying Officer Armstrong was the first to draw his service weapon, which caused Tiger to fire toward him first.
