Robert White will make the Denver Police Department a "more transparent" agency if the City Council approves him as the new chief, he said during a press conference on Saturday.

Chief White arrives from Louisville, Ky., where he served eight years as chief and developed a reputation as a disciplinarian who fired 28 cops in eight years as chief, reports the Denver Post. Mayor Michael Hancock nominated Chief White for the post.

"One thing I want to assure you of is that we will be more transparent and we will be more connected with the community," he said, reports 9News. "The old adage, 'What isn't broke, don't fix it,' I'm not from that school. If it's 99 percent, it's my job to make it 100 percent. So, where ever we are good or bad, I have a responsibility to make us better."

The Denver PD has been involved in several use-of-force incidents in the past several years that captured the attention of the national media, including a man who claimed officers excessively beat him with a flashlight, as well as the son of a sheriff's deputy who claimed officers used excessive force during a downtown nightclub arrest.

White has said he plans to reach out to people all over the city at community meetings, and stopping at church services.
