A man who shot a northern California officer was found dead in the custody of a Sacramento Police officer late Saturday.
Tyrone Smith, 32, was found unresponsive in the rear seat of a Sacramento PD cruiser, after being caught after a foot pursuit late Saturday night. Law enforcement officers had been searching for Smith for about seven hours, after he critically wounded a Twin Rivers Police officer.
His death was not a result of police actions, it has been determined.
The shooting occurred when the officer tried to pull over Smith's vehicle on Saturday afternoon. The suspect refused to stop, then after a short car chase got out of his vehicle and fled on foot. As the officer chased him, the suspect fired and hit the officer several times, the statement said.
