A Connecticut man now on death row for killing three people during a violent 2007 home invasion told the Hartford Courant he concocted a story that he was a serial killer as a suicide ploy.
It was the latest suicide ploy by the 49-year-old Steven Hayes, who has failed numerous other times to kill himself. Hayes and his cohort Joshua Komisarjevsky were convicted of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters Hayley, 17, and 11-year-old Michaela.
In a series of letters presented at Komisarjevsky's trial, Hayes claimed he had killed 17 other women, all runaways, hitchhikers and prostitutes.
During a recent interview with the Courant, Hayes admitted to the bogus story, saying he had hoped to make a deal to reveal the location of the bodies in exchange for soda, a pepperoni pizza and a dozen oysters with hot sauce.
Hayes is deathly allergic to oysters and wanted authorities to "find me dead in my cell the next morning."
