Seattle to Pay Police Captain $1 Million to Settle Lawsuit

The city of Seattle has agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit brought by a high-ranking, 30-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department.

Seattle police Capt. Eric Greening sued former Chief Adrian Diaz last year alleging that Diaz retaliated when Greening brought up concerns about racial and gender discrimination. Greening, who is Black, claimed Diaz rejected his reapplication to be an assistant chief and demoted him.

Diaz and the city previously denied Greening’s claims about the retaliation in court filings. On Monday, a Seattle City attorney’s office spokesperson sent The Seattle Times a copy of the settlement agreement on Monday, which includes $638,000 to Greening and $312,000 for his attorneys to cover legal fees.

The settlement agreement stipulates Greening will be on paid leave until a required resignation date of Feb. 1, 2026. The settlement agreement is not an admission of wrongdoing.
