Roane County Sheriff's Deputy Bill Jones and ride-along Mike Brown, a retired deputy, were fatally shot May 11, 2006 by Rocky Joe and Leon Houston in a shoot-out. Jones died with 19 gunshot wounds, Brown with 12. Several attempts to prosecute the brothers ended in mistrials.

"This ain't nothing complicated," Rocky Houston told the Knoxville News Sentinel. "It's real simple. We fear for our lives and our family's lives, and we will continue to defend our lives."
