VIDEO: Beach Officers, Bystanders Rescue Kids After Mom Drives into Daytona Surf
Volusia County (Fla.) Beach Patrol officers helped rescue three children Tuesday after their pregnant mother drove her van into the surf. They were assisted in removing the children from the vehicle by civilians who were on the beach.
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said at a news conference Wednesday the mother was undergoing a mental health evaluation, and her children, two girls and a boy, were placed in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. The South Carolina family of four was initially taken to Halifax Hospital with minor injuries.
Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris told WKMG-TV the woman was already driving on the beach, where cars are allowed, when the vehicle entered the water.
A tourist from Montreal, Simon Besner, captured the incident on video
