Florida Officer Shot During Traffic Stop

A suspect is in custody after a Jacksonville Sheriff's officer was wounded following a shooting in the on the west side of Jacksonville, Fla.

Jacksonville Fire & Rescue said paramedics took Officer Andrew Benson to UF Health with non life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the arm during a traffic stop Wednesday.

Police told WCTV the officer attempted to pull over a driver on Edison Avenue for a seatbelt violation. The driver, now identified at Donald Lee Goins, 33, continued traveling for several blocks before stopping on Cherokee Street.

As Benson exited his vehicle, police say Goins pointed a gun out of the driver's side window and shot Benson in the arm. Benson was able to take cover and return fire.

Police say Goins then drove away from the scene. He was arrested late last night in a home in Springfield.
