Two citizens helped rescue a Denver Police Department officer from a horrific beating Saturday, according to court documents, reports Colorado's 9 News .
Officer Aubree Thompson is recovering after being beaten, Commander Matt Murray confirmed to 9NEWS Monday.
An arrest affidavit for the suspect says Officer Thompson was responding to reports that a homeless man, 26-year-old Stephen K. Hamper, was washing clothing in a drain on the highway and in traffic when she was assaulted.
According to the document, when Officer Thompson attempted to handcuff Hamper, he punched her several times in the face. The document says Hamper attempted to grab Thompson's firearm while striking her in the face. That's when two citizens stopped to help Thompson regain control of Hamper.
According to court documents, Hamper was arrested, and reportedly stated "If I would have gotten her gun, I would have killed her."
Hamper is facing charges for attempted first-degree murder. Assaulting a peace officer is an additional charge.
Thompson is a 10-year veteran patrol officer for District 3. Her injuries are still being evaluated but she was released from the hospital.
