The Georgia Department of Corrections is investigating the death of Gregory Dale Mitchell, a 25-year employee at Hays State Prison in Trion, Ga. Officials said his death was an accident.

VIDEO: Georgia Corrections Officer Killed in Accident

A longtime corrections officer was killed last Tuesday in an accident at Hays State Prison in Trion, Ga., reports the Times Free Press.

The Georgia Department of Corrections is investigating the death of Gregory Dale Mitchell, a 25-year employee. Officials said his death was an accident.

A retired Hays officer with knowledge of the situation said Mitchell, 50, was killed when he was knocked out of a mechanical cart by a ladder.

"It appears it was just one of those freak accidents," the officer said.
