A man was wounded and later died after a dispute led to gunfire Thursday at Opry Mills Mall in Nashville, according to Nashville police and fire officials. Metro Nashville police said the shooting was apparently the result of an ongoing dispute between two males, one of whom was shot and brought to the hospital in critical condition, reports CBS and the Associated Press.

The suspected gunman left the mall and immediately surrendered to authorities, police say.

According to police spokesman Don Aaron, the suspect put his weapon on a counter at a ticket booth outside the mall and told the ticket taker he wanted no further trouble. Aaron says a retired California police officer, now living in Tennessee, stepped in and ordered the man to the ground. The suspect was then taken into custody, reports Fox News.

Police say both the suspect and victim are 22-year-old Nashville residents.

Troopers were already in the mall's parking lot doing motorcycle training, so they set up a perimeter to support the responding police officers, Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Miller said, reports CBS and the Associated Press.
