Judge: Man Who Killed Texas Chief Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
During the court proceedings, two psychiatrists — one employed by the defense, the other hired by the prosecution — said they believed Joshua Manuel Lopez was insane at the time of the crime.
Judge Sid Harle ruled that a preponderance of the evidence showed Joshua Manuel Lopez, 28, suffered from serious mental illness and did not know his conduct was wrong when he reportedly shot Elmendorf (TX) Police Chief Michael Pimentel during a traffic stop in 2014.
During the court proceedings, two psychiatrists — one employed by the defense, the other hired by the prosecution — said they believed Lopez was insane at the time of the crime.
Lopez will now be sent to the maximum-security state hospital in Vernon for a 30-day evaluation and treatment, at which point a Bexar County judge will determine if Lopez is a serious danger to others, according to the San Antonio News Express.
