Two officers with the Prince William County (VA) Police Department who survived the hail of gunfire that killed rookie Officer Ashley Guindon provided testimony in the death penalty trial of 34-year-old Ronald Hamilton.

Officer Jesse Hempen—who suffered a gunshot wound to his upper leg—and Officer David McKeown—who was shot in the chest, groin and right elbow—told the jury about the shooting, and how their lives have changed forever because of it, according to the Prince William Times.

Hamilton—an Army staff sergeant—is charged with capital murder and other counts in the deaths of his wife—Crystal Hamilton—as well as Officer Guindon.

Police had responded to the Hamilton residence after Crystal Hamilton had called 911 saying that her husband had assaulted her. During the call, the line went dead.

Police kicked in the door, and were met by a hail of gunfire from an AK-47 rifle.

Officer Ashley Guindon had been sworn in the previous day and was working her first day on the street with her training officer. She was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
