The town board in Deposit, New York held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss with interested citizens the proposal to dissolve their police department.
According to WBNG-TV, the board is considering the move in order to avoid a significant increase in taxes, estimated as high as a 30% hike.
Mayor Bryan Moore has told local media that the Village is not fully utilizing the police force.
One woman in attendance at the community meeting spoke up in support of keeping the police department intact, saying, "You're giving up protection to our community for a dollar sign. When did that become all right? When did our society say, 'hey, it's okay, we don’t need law enforcement because we'll let all the dirt bags takeover the community'."
If the department is dissolved, policing duties would likely fall on the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.
