The Bakersfield (CA) Police Department wants to keep "the Grinch" at bay this holiday season, and posted some safety tips for the citizens they serve on the agency's Facebook page.

The agency said, "Although holidays are seen as a time for giving, criminals view the holiday season as a time for taking. Shoppers can be vulnerable to crimes such as, theft, robbery, and assault."

The department suggested that citizens be alert and aware of their surroundings and avoid carrying unneeded items that might attract attention of criminals.

"Shop with others," the agency said in its social media post. "The chance of being victimized drops dramatically when you are with at least one other person. Use the buddy system!"

The post concluded, "If you must return to your car while shopping, put your bags in the trunk and move your car to a different location…criminals will be watching."
