The City of Salina Police Department's Support Division has launched a new system designed to help officers identify and deal with individual with special needs who may find themselves in an emergency situation.
According to KWCH-TV, the system—dubbed S.A.Id.—empowers parents, guardians, and caregivers, to complete a form that gives the Salina Police Department permission to create a specialized alert in their communication database.
The system allows officers to quickly get access to information on an individual's condition and/or needs prior to their arrival at a scene, allowing them to tailor their response, interaction, and communication to the communication capabilities of the individual.
The system is the result of the efforts of Dispatcher Amber Pfeifer who has a special needs child who likes to wander.
