An Elkins, WV, police officer was shot with a rifle while effecting an arrest Thursday night, the department said.
Jerry Lee Isner II, 46, is charged with malicious assault and attempted murder after shooting and wounding Senior Patrolman Daniel Sayre, 25, about 7:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Elkins Police Department.
Police said they received a call about a man walking around with a rifle in an alley, reports WCHS.
The suspect was ordered to stop and put the rifle on the ground. When he did not follow the commands, officers used a stun gun in an attempt to control him. Police said the suspect opened fire, hitting Sayre twice.
Officers said they were unable to return fire because bystanders were nearby.
Officials confirm Sayre was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, reports WOWK-TV. He has since been released from the hospital.
Patrolman Sayre has been a part of the Elkins Police Department since 2015.
