Las Vegas Officer Shot During George Floyd Protests Paralyzed from Neck Down

An officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department who was shot in the head as rioters stormed the streets in the wake of the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis is reportedly paralyzed from the neck down, on a ventilator, and unable to speak, his family said in a statement released by police.
Officer Shay Mikalonis was shot in early June and has been hospitalized ever since the incident.
The family said in a statement released on Twitter by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Saturday that Mikalonis is expected to stay on the ventilator and has been accepted at a spine rehabilitation center for further treatment, according to CBS News.
The family said on social media, "Our family can never express our gratitude for all the support for Shay. We are always Las Vegas Strong and so proud of our community."
The suspect—identified by authorities as 20-year-old Edgar Samaniego—now faces multiple charges including attempted murder and battery.
Samaniego is being held on $1 million bond.
Public defender Scott Coffee said after the hearing that Samaniego will plead not guilty.
